The Volta North Regional Police Command has secured the conviction of a 31-year-old woman for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.

The convict, Stella Amedzorme, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment after pleading guilty to the offence before the Kpando Circuit Court.

According to a police statement issued on August 5, the incident occurred on July 17, 2026, when the child's mother, Gloria Xagbe, 21, briefly left her eight-month-old son in the care of Amedzorme, a fellow market trader, while she went to purchase packaging bags.

Upon her return, both the suspect and the baby had disappeared, prompting an immediate report to the police.

Acting on intelligence, officers arrested Stella Amedzorme the following day at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, and successfully rescued the child unharmed.

During investigations, the convict admitted taking the baby on the instructions of her fiancé, who remains at large.

Amedzorme was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, 2026, where she was remanded into police custody.

She reappeared before the court on August 3, 2026, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to three years in prison.

The Volta North Regional Police Command assured that efforts are ongoing to arrest the suspect's fiancé to assist with investigations.

Police have assured the public of their commitment to protecting children and urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving their children in the care of others.
