Focus on governance, not 2028 flagbearer race Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urges NDC

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has cautioned members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against engaging in early discussions about the party’s next presidential candidate, urging them instead to concentrate on delivering on the mandate entrusted to the government by Ghanaians.

Speaking on The KSM Show on Friday, August 7, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said it was premature to begin succession politics when the government had not yet completed two years in office.

According to her, the NDC was elected to address the country’s challenges and fulfil its campaign promises, not to begin campaigning for the 2028 general election.

She described the growing speculation over the party’s future flagbearer as a distraction that could undermine the confidence Ghanaians have placed in the administration.

Responding to a question about whether she intends to contest the NDC’s flagbearer position, the Vice President said the party’s future electoral fortunes would depend largely on its performance in government and the support members give to President John Dramani Mahama.

“Whether we are going or coming depends on the work we are doing. It depends on the support we are giving our president who’s leading the charge. And it depends on the quality of support we are giving,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general election was achieved through years of hard work, sacrifice and determination despite limited financial resources.

She stressed that party members should remain focused on governance rather than internal political contests.

“And if we are already going left or right, and centre and back, and it’s not even time, I think it’s a betrayal of the cause of the people, and I don’t think it is right. So please help us to fulfill the dreams of this beautiful country. Let’s focus on getting the job done,” she added.

The Vice President’s comments come amid increasing public discussion over the NDC’s future leadership, even as the Mahama administration continues to implement its policy agenda.
