The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted a large consignment of suspected cocaine concealed in sacks of gari and intended for export at the Tema Harbour enclave.

The operation, carried out on the evening of August 5, 2026, followed intelligence indicating that a group of men were loading parcels of a white substance hidden in sacks of gari into a 40-foot container for shipment.

Acting on the intelligence, Tema police officers raided the said warehouse in the Tema harbour enclave where they found three men allegedly supervising the loading operation.

This was disclosed by the Tema Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Eric Asamoah Asiedu at a press conference on August 6, 2026.

The suspects have been identified as Delano Owen, 31, a Dutch national, John Mensah Sarbah, 41, and Alhaji Iddrisu Haruna, 52.

The officers observed sacks containing the suspected substances being loaded into a 40-foot container mounted on a white DAF truck with registration number WR 1118-10.

The suspects and the truck were subsequently escorted to the Tema Regional Police Headquarters for further investigations.

A thorough search of the sacks led to the discovery of 866 parcels of a white substance suspected to be cocaine, with an estimated street value of $6.928 million.

According to the police, during interrogation, Delano Owen allegedly admitted ownership of the consignment and stated that the substance was cocaine.

The three suspects remain in police custody to assist with investigations, while the seized exhibits have been secured as evidence.

Police say the recovered substance will undergo forensic analysis to determine its exact composition as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the attempted export of the suspected narcotics.
