NPP re-run Bantema Constituency election under tight security after annulment of initial poll

A re-run election for Bantema Constituency executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is underway at the Kumasi Cultural Centre amid tight security.

The exercise comes after the NPP’s National Steering Committee annulled the initial election held on Sunday, July 11, 2026.

In a statement, the Committee cited breaches of party directives, election regulations and, in some cases, existing court orders as reasons for nullifying the earlier polls.

Despite the National Steering Committee’s decision, JoyNews understands that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, sworn into office those elected during the annulled election. However, the party is insisting on a re-run.

That development created tension within the constituency and raised questions about party authority and internal discipline ahead of the re-run.

In contrast to the initial election, which was held without Electoral Commission oversight, the ongoing process is being supervised by officials from the Commission.

A total of 1,258 delegates are expected to cast their ballots as three different voting centers have been created at the polling center to ensure the smooth conduct of the process.

Party officials say the re-run is also being closely supervised by national and regional representatives to ensure strict adherence to the NPP’s constitution and electoral guidelines.

Security personnel from the Ghana Police Service have been deployed to the venue to maintain law and order and prevent any possible disturbances.

The process, which is scheduled to end at 4pm, will see delegates elect new constituency executives to lead the party’s activities in Bantema ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The NPP leadership says it remains committed to upholding due process and ensuring unity within the party structures in the Ashanti Region.

The keenly contested position is that of Chairman, between the incumbent, Fiifi Mensah and his vice, Kingsley Atta.

In the annulled election, Kingsley Atta defeated the incumbent chairman, Fiifi Mensah, with 714 votes, representing 72.8% of the 995 valid votes cast. Fiifi Mensah obtained 267 votes, representing 27.2%.
